Political scientist: BRICS aims to minimize influence of West

BRICS will not remain just an economic platform. Tt is an organization that aims to minimize the influence of the West, Aytan Gurbanova, an instructor of the Department of International Relations at the Baku State University (BSU), said at the event themed on Azerbaijan and BRICS: opportunities and prospects, Report informs.

According to her, the position of some BRICS members regarding the processes in the South Caucasus is ambiguous: "We can see this in relation to the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process. Therefore, the development of cooperation within the framework of this organization is of great importance in terms of building of new relations. Azerbaijan is also an important partner for BRICS. This is an organization that aims to minimize the influence of the West in the future."

Gurbanova added that the movement of this organization towards the South Caucasus is an important development perspective for it: "Today, we can clearly see that the steps taken within BRICS are part of the new world order. In my opinion, the representation of the South Caucasus in this organization is one of the most important issues. Azerbaijan is not a supporter of the unipolar world order, but we do not intend to accept any issue dictated by the international relations formed by the West. We are the leading state of the region."

BRICS was founded in 2001 and is an intergovernmental organization that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, the Republic of South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
