Bryza: EU commissioner’s statement reflects long-standing appreciation of Azerbaijan’s importance

European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi’s comments that Azerbaijan is a strong partner of the EU and the Union wants to boost its cooperation with the country reflect the long-standing EU appreciation of Azerbaijan’s importance, senior fellow at the US Atlantic Council, international expert Matthew Bryza told Report.

Bryza was commenting on the statements made by the EU commissioner in Baku on July 8.

The expert said this importance of Azerbaijan may only grow during the post-conflict period if the transit routes from Azerbaijan cross Armenia into Nakhchivan and from there into Turkey and thus the Zangezur Corridor becomes a reality.

“Who knows maybe there will be some natural gas coming from Turkmenistan, perhaps from the Dostluq field or from another offshore field in the western Turkmen waters in the Caspian Sea. All of that will increase importance of Azerbaijan as a transit corridor”, - Bryza added.
