Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that his country will not support the European Commission's plan to abandon Russian energy carriers, but if the decision is approved by a majority vote rather than consensus, they will not be able to prevent its adoption by the European Union (EU), Report informs via TASS.
He shared these insights on the air of the Kossuth radio.
"They can adopt this by a majority vote," Orban said while commenting on Brussels' initiative to stop the supply of Russian gas, oil, and nuclear fuel in the coming years.
The prime minister emphasized that he considers this plan directed against Hungary because he does not support Ukraine's accession to the EU and opposes the majority of community members on this issue.
According to Orban, the implementation of the EC plan will lead to price increases and negatively affect Hungarian families: "If energy prices rise due to the ban on Russian gas, Hungary will pay 800 billion forints ($2 billion euros) more annually."
He also pointed out that Hungary has like-minded partners in the EU and cited Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who called the EC's proposal "economic suicide" for Europe. Orban added that a serious struggle around this issue is expected in the EU in the coming months.
