Dutch special envoy: Water crisis may result in up to 15% of loss in global GDP

According to calculations by the Global Commission on Water Economy, the water crisis, threatening global food production, may lead to GDP losses of 8% to 15% in countries by 2050, Dutch Special Envoy for Water, Meike van Ginneken, said at the water actions and solutions event within COP29, Report informs.

She noted that the Baku Declaration is an important step towards including water in the global climate agenda.

Advancing this process is now the responsibility of each of us, she said.

Ginneken emphasized that major investments are being made in water resource management for climate change adaptation: "Countries are implementing innovative technologies to protect and restore wetlands, lakes, and rivers from risks such as irregular precipitation, rising sea levels, etc."
