Azerbaijan and China mull increasing number of block trains on Middle Corridor

JSC Azerbaijan Railways, part of AZCON Holding, is participating in the international exhibition Transport Logistic 2025 held from June 2 to 5 in Munich, Germany.

At the prestigious mobility exhibition, AZD is featured with a dedicated stand providing detailed information on its freight transportation along international corridors, ongoing railway projects in Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur, infrastructure development, sustainable practices, digital solutions, and services at Baku Port.

During the event, Azerbaijan Railways Chairman Rovshan Rustamov held meetings with leaders of several leading transport and logistics companies.

In a meeting with Yang Bin, President of China Railway Container Transport Corporation (CRCT), the expanding transport links between Azerbaijan and China were discussed. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of agreements signed during Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's April visit to China, which promote the joint Belt, Road initiative and international multimodal transportation.

The parties exchanged views on further measures to increase the number of container block trains operating on the Middle Corridor and discussed a digital platform that will enable tracking of cargo moving from China towards the Black Sea. It was highlighted that CRCT's joining to the jointly established enterprise Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd., created by railway authorities from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan, is a significant step in strengthening the Middle Corridor’s capacity.

Rovshan Rustamov also met with Wangsu Dong, Executive Director of Beijing Trans Eurasia International Logistics, to discuss the company's proposals for expanding cooperation with AZD regarding block train shipments from China to Europe and back. Plans for increasing freight volumes on the Middle Corridor in the upcoming period were reviewed.

Additionally, at the exhibition, the Azerbaijan Railways chairman discussed with Boris Balev, CEO of Burgas Port (Bulgaria), and the management of Germany’s HHLA International GmbH operating in Hamburg Port, the expansion of cooperation between regional ports to facilitate efficient freight transport along the Middle Corridor.

Meetings with leaders of Germany’s Rhenus Group and Austria's ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (a subsidiary of Austrian Railways) included exchanges on possible joint efforts to improve the organization of freight traffic through Azerbaijan as part of the China–Europe–China transport link.

Throughout the discussions, Azerbaijan's leading role as a critical hub in East-West transport connections was emphasized, alongside prospects for transport infrastructure development, including the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line.
