A nasal spray Covid-19 vaccine being developed by the University of Hong Kong could be available on the market in 2-3 years, Report informs referring to the South China Morning Post.

Professor Ivan Hung Fan-ngai, a member of the HKU team working on the nasal vaccine, said more than 10 people had taken part in phase one of the trial.

“So far, we’re seeing that the vaccine is very safe. We’re following up on the level of antibodies being generated,” he told a radio program.

So far, side effects recorded have been only mild headaches and nasal congestion.

Those who have not received any Covid-19 vaccines will need two doses of the HKU version when it becomes available. But those who have been fully vaccinated – with two doses of either the Chinese-made Sinovac or German-made BioNTech vaccines available in Hong Kong – would only need one dose of the HKU vaccine as a booster.

Vaccines currently available against the coronavirus are administered through injections. But nasal spray versions are being developed in some places such as Hong Kong, Australia and Finland.
