European Commission: Middle Corridor gains increasing significance

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR or Middle Corridor), is playing a crucial role in the changing geopolitical landscape, Maja Marčić, Deputy Director-General – Directorate-General Mobility and Transport (MOVE) within the European Commission, told Report.

"The Middle Corridor is becoming increasingly important. We need to find a sustainable solution, especially in the wake of the war in Ukraine," Marčić stated.

"It's not just about infrastructure development; digitalization is also a key element. The declaration signed in Baku has made a significant contribution to strengthening cooperation, allowing us to work on creating a fully sustainable corridor. Of course, there are certain challenges, but as demonstrated today, working together can overcome them and unlock the great potential of this route."

Marčić emphasized that developing transport sustainability is a crucial step towards achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement. "Transport accounts for approximately one-fifth of global CO2 emissions. Therefore, all parties must join forces to reduce emissions in the aviation, maritime, and land transport sectors," she said.

“The discussions held today showed that the global community recognizes this necessity and is ready to take action.”
