Over 116,000 evacuated as wildfires spread in Spain

More than 116,000 people have been evacuated in Madrid and the Spanish provinces of Ávila and Castellón due to wildfires, Report informs, citing El País.

Authorities said on Sunday that the vast majority of those affected, about 100,000 people, were residents of Madrid and Ávila, while another 15,000 were from Castellón.

According to the newspaper, the fire in Madrid remains uncontrolled despite a decrease in intensity overnight. The blaze has destroyed more than 45,000 hectares in the Madrid region and Ávila, while in Castellón the fire perimeter has reached 21 kilometers.

El País said the total area burned by wildfires in Spain could amount to around 131,113 hectares.

Madrid authorities said firefighting efforts would again be affected by high temperatures, low humidity and uncertainty over wind direction.
