NATO members have not reached a consensus on Ukraine's entry into the bloc, Deputy Secretary General of the Alliance Mircea Geoana said in an interview with the Romanian DCnews agency, Report informs.
"At the moment we don't see a consensus within NATO," Geoana said.
He believes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy understands that during the ongoing conflict, the topic of Ukraine's accession to NATO "should be put on hold."
At the same time, according to him, this does not mean that certain decisions will not be made at the NATO summit in Vilnius, which will be held on July 11-12, including upgrading the NATO-Ukraine Commission to the level of the NATO-Ukraine Council.
“Ukraine is now closer to NATO and Western democracies than ever,” Geoana stressed.
The deputy secretary general added that at the Vilnius summit, the NATO countries’ leaders will approve the most important change in military strategy and planning of the past 50 years.
