European Council President António Costa stated that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, but stressed Tehran's rejection should be achieved through diplomatic means.
According to Report, citing Interfax, Costa made the remarks in Canada, where the G7 Summit is opening on Monday.
"We must step up our efforts in the Middle East. Iran must not be allowed to pursue nuclear weapons. This issue must be addressed through diplomacy. Now is the time to give diplomacy space and an opportunity to de-escalate the situation between Israel and Iran," Costa said.
He also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine.
"We must remain collectively committed to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, by promoting peace efforts led by the United States and giving those efforts the best chance of success," he stated.
According to Costa, this includes "creating the conditions for lasting peace, including long-term security guarantees, continued military and financial aid to Ukraine, strengthening its defense capabilities, and ensuring swift reconstruction," "increased pressure on Russia through additional sanctions and insisting on an unconditional ceasefire."
