SCO Summit: Eurasian Security, Economic Partnership, and Global Geopolitics

SCO summit (officially known as the Meeting of the Council of Heads of Member States of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Chinese: 上海合作组织成员国元首理事会会议, Russian: Саммит Шанхайской организации сотрудничества) is the highest-level annual summit of the heads of state and government of the member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). As one of the most influential international platforms in the Eurasian region, the summit serves as the primary forum for making strategic decisions regarding regional security, stability, economic cooperation, trade, and cultural partnerships.

1. Core Objectives and Agenda

The SCO summits serve as a decisive mechanism for realizing the organization's foundational goals:

Regional Security and Counter-Terrorism: Strengthening joint efforts to combat the "three evils" of terrorism, separatism, and extremism, alongside coordinating border security and organized crime measures.

Economic Cooperation and Trade: Boosting mutual trade turnover between member states, expanding transport and logistics corridors, and advancing investment projects and financial integration initiatives.

Cultural and Humanitarian Ties: Promoting friendship, good-neighborliness, and collaborative programs in education, science, tourism, and public health among member nations.

2. Participants and Expansion Process

Founders (Shanghai Five): The organization was originally established in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, with Uzbekistan joining shortly thereafter.

New Members and Partners: In subsequent years, India and Pakistan (2017), Iran (2023), and Belarus (2024) joined as full member states. Numerous observer states and dialogue partners (including Azerbaijan, Turkey, and other nations) also regularly participate in the summits.

3. Role in Global Politics

SCO summits function as a unique diplomatic tribunal for discussing the formation of a multipolar world order independent of Western structures, regional economic integration, and global challenges. The summits typically conclude with the signing of the "Shanghai Declaration" and vital strategic documents that define the organization's trajectory for the coming year.
