Russian MP urges to expand inter-parliamentary dialogue with Azerbaijan

The parliaments of Azerbaijan and Russia maintain traditionally confidential contacts, Russian MP Alla Polyakova said at the round table meeting “Russia and Azerbaijan - Friendship, Cooperation and Respect” held in Moscow, Report’s Russian bureau informs.

“Heydar Aliyev played a big role in establishing relations between Azerbaijan and Russia, and current President Ilham Aliyev continues to develop the foundations laid by his father. This year, a landmark event in Azerbaijani-Russian relations - a declaration on allied cooperation was signed between Azerbaijan and Russia. The document focuses on building up economic cooperation and intensifying dialogue in the humanitarian sphere,” Polyakova said.

She noted that the deputies of the two countries maintain traditionally trusting contacts: “Parliamentarians are actively cooperating within the inter-parliamentary commission on cooperation between the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Azerbaijani Parliament. In 2021, the chairpersons of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko and the Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova met twice on the sidelines of the meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS member states and the Eurasian Women’s Forum. It is necessary to further expand the inter-parliamentary dialogue.”

The MP also reminded that a deputy group for relations with the Azerbaijani parliament was created in the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
