European politicians oppose inclusion of nuclear power in EU taxonomy

Sixteen politicians from eight European countries have appealed to the European Commission demanding not to include nuclear power in EU taxonomy - a part of the European green deal, aimed to develop sustainable financing and low-carbon economy in Europe, Report informs, citing TASS.

Fossil power, nuclear energy, and gas are not ecologically safe and cannot be classified as sustainable investments in the EU's taxonomy. The European Commission should exclude gas and atomic energy from green taxonomy to ensure its reliability and direct investments in really ecologically safe sources of energy, the politicians said in their letter.

They believe that renewable energy sources are the thing of the future. Therefore the European Commission's aspiration to portray investments in new nuclear and gas power plants as 'sustainable' is wrong.

On November 11, acting Minister of the Environment of Germany Svenja Schulze, speaking at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow, noted that the inclusion of nuclear energy in the taxonomy of the European Union would lead to disunity and lack of trust in it from the overwhelming majority of the population, as well as many depositors and investors.
