Argentine experts have discovered about 2,500 baby elephant seals in the south of the country who have died from bird flu, according to La Nacion newspaper, Report informs referring to TASS.

According to experts, over 26 days, 2,494 dead baby elephant seals were found in the coastal zone in the province of Chubut, most of them on the Valdez Peninsula, the entire territory of which is a nature reserve. Tests of samples from about 200 animals confirmed that they died from bird flu.

According to scientists, the high mortality rate could be caused by a mutation of the virus, which became more infectious among mammals.
