German minister: Baku Water Dialogue might greatly contribute to concrete actions

The Baku Water Dialogue for Climate Action is set to spark crucial discussions and drive concrete actions, Steffi Lemke, Germany's Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection said at the event, held as a part of COP29, Report informs.

"We are currently facing more droughts, increasing water scarcity, and devastating floods," stated Lemke. "Water should not be a symbol of crisis, but an integral part of the solution. That's why we highly appreciate the COP leadership's attention to the water issue. The Baku Dialogue can make a substantial contribution to thoughtful discussions and the implementation of concrete measures."

Lemke stressed the necessity of systematically integrating water issues into various policy areas. "Restored peatlands absorb large amounts of carbon. Moreover, water is a key element of adaptation processes and is vital for global adaptation goals. Water policy must be an integral part of national adaptation plans," she added.

Highlighting the Baku Dialogue as an essential platform for global water governance, Lemke expressed Germany's readiness to actively participate in the process. "We can learn a lot from each other about water management. Germany is ready to actively participate in this process. We must work together to protect water as a source of life," she emphasized.

Minister Lemke reiterated that water is not only crucial for climate adaptation but also a fundamental condition for global sustainability and life itself.
