The Thai island of Ko Samui has announced its intention to open borders to foreign tourists, provided 70 percent of its population is vaccinated against the coronavirus, Report informs referring to RIA Novosti.

Ratchaporn Pulsavadi, president of the Ko Samui Tourism Association, said the island’s government will do its best to fully compete with other countries in the coming season to attract foreign visitors.

He noted that the entire infrastructure of Samui is focused specifically on foreigners, therefore, without them, the island’s economy has been balancing on the brink of bankruptcy throughout the last year.

Ratchaporn also noted that vaccinated tourists arriving in Ko Samui will also be able to travel without quarantine to the neighboring islands of Ko Tao, a favorite diving destination, and Ko Phangan, where the famous Full Moon Party is held every month.

The Thai government is expected to approve plans in March to create vaccination passports and reduce the quarantine period for foreigners.
