Ukraine: History, Geopolitics, Economy, and Culture

Ukraine is a sovereign state in Eastern Europe, bordered by the Russian Federation to the east and northeast, Belarus to the north, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west, and Romania and Moldova to the southwest, with a long coastline along the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the south. Spanning over 603,628 square kilometers, it is the largest country located entirely within Europe. As a democratic republic with its capital and largest city in Kyiv, Ukraine is a founding member of the United Nations and a pivotal geopolitical bridge between Europe and Eurasia, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, vast agricultural potential, and strategic importance in global security.

1. Historical Background and Independence

Ancient and Medieval Roots: The territory of modern Ukraine has a deep history, serving as the heartland of Kievan Rus' from the 9th to the 13th century—a major medieval East Slavic state that shaped the cultural and religious identity of the region.

Cossack Era and Empires: Following the disintegration of Kievan Rus', the region experienced periods of Mongol rule, Lithuanian-Polish integration, and the rise of the Cossack Hetmanate in the 17th century. The "Breadbasket of Europe": Ukraine possesses vast expanses of highly fertile black soil (chernozem), making it one of the world's leading agricultural producers and exporters of wheat, corn, barley, and sunflower oil.
