A strong explosion in Havana destroyed the building of the Saratoga Hotel, located opposite the Capitol, Report informs, citing RIA Novosti.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be established, but, according to one version, it occurred when liquefied gas was pumped from a tank.

"A powerful explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana shook the Cuban capital early in the day, causing serious property damage and injuring several people," Noticias Cuba reported. Pictures from the scene, posted on social networks, show that the building has been significantly destroyed. Rescuers are working on the spot, the rubble is being cleared, and evacuation is underway.

Saratoga Hotel is located in Old Havana, across the street from the Capitol. It was built in 1880 and renovated in 2005.
