Speaker of Sierra Leonean Parliament: Azerbaijan's chairmanship of NAM breathes new life into movement

Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has breathed new life into the movement, said Abass Chernor Bundu, the speaker of the Sierra Leone House of Parliament, Report informs, citing Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis.

He made the remark during the meeting with the Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament (Milli Majlis), Sahiba Gafarova, who was on a business trip to the Swiss Confederation within the framework of the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Geneva.

At the meeting, views were exchanged on the possibilities of developing inter-parliamentary relations, as well as the importance of cooperation within the framework of international organizations.

During the conversation, the important role of Azerbaijan in the activities of the Non-Aligned Movement and its Parliamentary Network was mentioned.

It was brought to attention that during Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the NAM, important steps were taken in the direction of the institutional development of this organization. It was also stated that the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Youth Organization of the Non-Aligned Movement were founded on the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

Gafarova said that the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network plays an important role in the development of parliamentary diplomacy, in expanding relations between the legislative bodies of the member countries of the organization, as well as in showing solidarity for solving a number of issues that concern humanity.

The issues focused on by the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network coincide with new challenges, especially Azerbaijan's position on the issue of decolonization was appreciated by the opposite side.

The importance of the development of inter-parliamentary relations was mentioned in the meeting, it was stated that the meetings held within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other international organizations and the established dialogue serve to deepen the relations between the legislative bodies of both countries.

At the meeting, opinions were exchanged on other issues of mutual interest.
