Umberto de Pretto: Middle Corridor could be shortest route to US for OTS countries

The Middle Corridor could become the shortest route not only to Europe but also to the US for member countries of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), said Umberto de Pretto, Secretary General of the International Road Transport Union, Report informs.

He made this statement during the 10th Meeting of Heads of Customs Administrations of the OTS held in Baku.

"OTS member countries can send cargo via the Middle Corridor to China, and from there, through ports, to the US east coast. Everything achieved along the Middle Corridor will impact global trade. However, as identified in a report 25 years ago, there are still obstacles. If it were easy to utilize the Middle Corridor, it would have been done already. We face infrastructure challenges. The only way to facilitate trade is through procedures such as customs," emphasized de Pretto.

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), known as the Middle Corridor, extends from China through Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey to European countries. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line is an integral part of this corridor.

In 2024, the volume of cargo transported from China via the Middle Corridor increased more than 25 times compared to 2023, exceeding 27,000 containers.
