Port of Baku signs agreement to expand freight traffic from Europe to Central Asia and China

The Baku International Sea Trade Port has signed an agreement with the Austrian ÖBB Rail Cargo Group and Netherlands Cabooter Group to strengthen and expand freight traffic from Europe to Central Asia and China via the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor), Report informs.

The Austrian Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology Andreas Reihard and Azerbaijani Ambassador to Austria Galib Israfilov were present at the signing ceremony.

In accordance with the agreement, the parties decided to promote Middle corridor in Europe and strengthen ties between the European freight networks and logistics hubs.

The Austrian minister stated that the agreement signed today is a new strategic initiative on ÖBB Rail Cargo Group expanding towards Central Asia and China.

“Port of Baku will play a key role in development of this initiative. We expect the mentioned route to be efficient in terms of timing and volumes of freight cargo carriage,” the Austrian minister said.

Director-General of the Port of Baku, Dr. Taleh Ziyadov noted that the agreement with the new partner, Austrian ÖBB Rail Cargo Group is the most important stage in expanding the West to East transport corridor from Netherland transport hub Venlo and Germany to Turkey (Istanbul), Azerbaijan (Baku), Central Europe and further to China.

Port of Baku is located at the heart of the Eurasian continent, plays a role of bridge between the EU, Central Asia and China. Over the past 10 years the export from EU countries to China increased threefold making China the second trade partner of EU and opening huge opportunities for Port of Baku and Middle Corridor, as well as for the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group and Cabooter Group.

OBB Rail Cargo Group is one of the leading railway logistic company in Europe with 8.500-strong staff and an annual turnover of 2.3 billion euro. The company operates a large logistic network across the country and has many branches in Europe.
