Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO) is considering ordering two container ships with a capacity of 530 TEU in the context of the containerization trend observed in the Caspian region, ASCO's Deputy Chairman of the Management Board Tariyel Mirzayev told Report.
He made the remark on the sidelines of a roundtable discussion on "Middle Corridor: Connection through the Caspian Sea."
"If container volumes increase in the future, the construction of ships with 1000 TEU capacity is also being considered as an optimal option," ASCO stated.
According to Mirzayev, over the past 10 years, the company has launched 32 vessels as part of the fleet renewal program. Currently, the construction of 11 more vessels continues at the Baku Shipyard.
"Today, ASCO's fleet has two unique RoPax type ferry vessels, and the building of an additional vessel of this type is ongoing. Additionally, there are plans to consider acquiring larger ferry vessels that can load 1-2 complete block container trains without separation," Mirzayev noted.
The deputy chairman also revealed plans regarding the acquisition of ferries capable of simultaneous loading on both decks.
He explained that work is currently being carried out with partners such as Kazakhstan's Kazmortransflot, Caspian Integrated Maritime Solutions (CIMS), and AD Ports Group to study the possibilities of launching such ferry vessels. A consultant has already been engaged to conduct the technical and economic assessment of the project.
Mirzayev also highlighted the importance of adhering to time standards during vessel processing in ports, as this factor directly affects cargo flow efficiency.
The official mentioned that the implementation speed of this process determines the volume of wheeled equipment transported (wagons, vehicles), as it is possible to transport up to 120,000 units within 5-6 hours, up to 90,000 units within 8-10 hours, and no more than 70,000 units in 12 hours or more.
These initiatives are aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the Trans-Caspian route and developing the Middle Corridor, he concluded.
