AIBA to pay $ 10 mln debt to Azerbaijan in 2021

Baku. 1 February. REPORT.AZ/ International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) will start to pay $ 10 mln debt to Azerbaijan in 2021.

Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation Naghi Safarov told Report.

According to him, repayment of loan given by Benkons to AIBA seven years ago will be based on the agreement reached by the parties at the extraordinary Congress of the Supreme Boxing Organization in Dubai, UAE.

Safarov said that former president of the organization, Wu Ching-kuo, did not want to repay the money he received on behalf of AIBA:

“Dr. Wu stated that he did not sign the agreement and denied his signature. As a result, the court has proved that the signature is valid and that the funds had to be returned. At the Congress held in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2016, Vu said no one had a financial obligation. Several national federations appealed to him to examine his views on the media. But they were told that everything was alright. The issue was seriously lifted after the international audit company did not give opinion. The issue of the AIBA Executive Committee meeting in July 2017 in Moscow, Russia, raised the issue that Wu should inform boxing community about what happened. As a result, it was clear that he cheated on all.

After listening to all reports in the Post-Congress in Dubai, the general idea was that Wu did not take the right step. Another issue on the agenda was his announcement as honorary president of AIBA. However, all Congress participants voted against it. As a result, Wu was removed from all the positions in the organization”.

Safarov also commented on the prospect of removing the boxing from the Summer Olympic Games program: "For a long time letters are coming from the International Olympic Committee noticing us to pay attention to financial and other issues. Everyone saw what embarrassment happened during 2016 Rio Olympics. Reforms in this area are required. Boxing will also be on the agenda of the meeting of the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee next year”.

Notably, Gafur Rahimov from Uzbekistan was elected as the temporary president of AIBA.
