Resident Coordinator: UN ready to support Azerbaijan

"Human rights are constantly violated in many parts of the world. Our main goal is to achieve better protection of human rights by 2030," UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Gulam Ishaqzai said.

Report informs that he spoke at the XVI Baku International Conference of Ombudsmen held on the topic of "The role of Ombudsmen in achieving Fair Peace and Sustainable Development Goals."

He said that the UN is ready to provide all the support for Azerbaijan to achieve Sustainable Development Goals: "Azerbaijan is a country, which is committed to achieving goals by 2030. Azerbaijan has submitted its first voluntary report on achieving sustainable development goals and will issue the next report in July. This shows commitment of the official Baku to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals."

According to Ishaqzai, ombudsmen have a very important role in the protection of human rights: “Ombudsmen play a role of a bridge between parties - civil society and institutions. The ombudsmen have a mandate to take an active part in all matters related to human rights. In fact, independent ombudsmen are an important indicator of sustainable development.”
