The Embassy of Japan in Azerbaijan hosted an official reception to mark the birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador of Japan to Azerbaijan Katori Teruyuki said that last year was significant for the development of relations between the two countries.

The Japanese Ambassador underlined that 2019 was a remarkable year in terms of the development of relations between our countries.

Reminding that Japan will host the Olympic Games this summer, the ambassador expressed hope for the active involvement of Azerbaijani athletes in the competitions. 

"The Azerbaijanis visiting Japan will be able to get acquainted with Japanese culture and nature," he said.

Addressing the ceremony, Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev hailed the friendly relations and partnership between Japan and Azerbaijan. 

"The high-level mutual relations between our countries have laid the foundation for the development and deepening of cooperation in all spheres," he added.

Babayev stressed that both countries have always contributed to international peace and security. 

"Japan’s support for Azerbaijan’s position in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of internationally recognized borders is of utmost importance," he emphasized.

Japan’s new Emperor Naruhito acceded to the throne on May 1, 2019. The country's government marks its national day on the reigning Emperor's birthday on February 23.

Japan's 126th emperor, 60-year-old Naruhito was born on February 23, 1960, in Tokyo. The new Emperor is known to have several hobbies, including mountain climbing, jogging, playing tennis, and skiing. When Naruhito was four years old, he was enrolled in the prestigious Gakushuin school system, where many of Japan's elite families send their children.
