Report/ Elchin Murad

Baku. 22 February. REPORT.AZ/ Sumgayit events were a diversion and provocation committed by the Armenian side.

Report informs, head of the press service of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Hikmat Hajiyev said at a press conference.

Notably, this year marks the 30th anniversary of Sumgayit events on February 27-29, 1988.

"In the 80s of the last century, Armenia resorted to aggression against Azerbaijan, which culminated in military aggression and crimes against humanity, against the peaceful population of Azerbaijan. Terrorist organizations of Armenia had committed terrorist acts against the population of Azerbaijan. The culmination of these provocations was the Sumgayit events”, Hajiyev said.

He noted that the investigation of these events continues, adding that they were "diversion and provocation" from the Armenian side.

"Armenians carrying out the aggressive policy of separatism realized that they had the opportunity to perform their provocation.Today, the Armenian lobby is trying to present the Sumgayit events in a different light, which is not true", the Azerbaijani MFA spokesperson added.

According to him, as a result of the chauvinistic policy pursued by the Armenian leadership, the country has become a monoethnic.

"We will continue to work on reporting information on crimes of Armenia to the international community," Hajiyev added.
