Azerbaijani FM: Distortion of Helsinki principles, selective approach to their mplementation is a cause of instability in OSCE area

Baku. 14. July. REPORT.AZ/ "Distortion of the Helsinki principles and other OSCE commitments by the participating countries, a selective approach to their implementation and application of double standards can become a cause of instability in the OSCE area, as well as lead to the stagnation of the processes of settlement of existing conflicts and increase the risk of resumption."

Report informs, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan said, taking part in an official meeting of the OSCE on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Helsinki Final Act.

High-level delegation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan attended the informal high-level meeting of the OSCE held to mark the 40th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act.

Speaking at the meeting, the Azerbaijani delegation drew attention of the participants of the meeting to the unresolved conflicts in the OSCE area, stressing that the roots of the crisis in the European security system are in these conflicts accompanied by a clear violation of the principles of interstate relations enshrined in the Helsinki Final Act and failure in resolution of those conflicts for the last 25 years is the most serious threat to peace and security in the OSCE region as a whole.

The Azerbaijani delegation emphasized that, distortion of the Helsinki Principles and other obligations of the OSCE by member states and demonstration of a selective and double-standard approach toward their application lead to instability in the OSCE area as well as the stagnation in the resolution of the ongoing conflicts and raise their risk of re-ignition.

The participants also told that some OSCE participating states, distorting equal rights and self-determination of peoples in order to cover up their illegal acts, as well as actions running contrary to the international law like threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, annexation by the use of force of the territory and forcing people to leave their homelands, cause conflicts and hamper their solutions.

The Azerbaijani delegation highlighted that, strengthening activities to ensure observance of OSCE principles without any selective and double-standard approach could contribute to resolution of the conflicts.

It was noted that the Helsinki Final Act maintains its importance in the context of interstate relations among absolute majority of participating states and way out of the current crisis in the European security system is unconditional observance of Helsinki Decalogue. The importance of respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states, inviolability of internationally recognized borders and intensifying efforts to resolve conflicts was underlined.
