Official: US supports participation of other energy suppliers in Southern Gas Corridor

The United States supports participation of other suppliers of energy sources in the Southern Gas Corridor, Kent Logsdon, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Bureau of Energy Resources, US Department of State, told Report in Austin (Texas) at an international Energy reporting tour, organized by the US Department of State Foreign Press Centers.

"We are pleased with the long-term cooperation with Azerbaijan, as well as with support to the Southern Gas Corridor. I visited Baku a few months ago. It was a pleasure to see the successful implementation of the Corridor," he said.

Logsdon also noted that the United States keep on supporting the SGC and this will help diversify sources of energy supplies and transportation routes to Europe.

The Southern Gas Corridor is designed to transport Shahdeniz 2 gas to Turkey and Europe. Shahdeniz 2 project, South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion, Trans-Anadolu Pipeline (TANAP), constructed in the territory of Turkey, the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) extending to Southern Italy via Greece, Albania and Adriatic shelf are the main components of the SGC.

At the initial stage, 16 bcm of gas is planned to be transported, of which 6 bcm will be transported to Turkey and 10 bcm to the European market. On June 30, 2018, TANAP commenced to transport commercial gas to the Turkish market. Azerbaijani gas is planned to be delivered to Europe in early 2020 and is expected to meet 33% of demand for gas in Bulgaria, 20% in Greece, and nearly 10.5% in Italy.
