The Netherlands has extended the life of its only operating nuclear power plant and plans to build two more plants in the future, the acting Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte said at the international nuclear energy summit in Brussels, Report informs via TASS.

“We cannot achieve zero emissions soon without substantial investment in nuclear energy,” he noted. “That is what we are doing. We are investing in the existing nuclear power plant in the town of Borssele to extend its life, and are preparing to build two more large nuclear facilities in the coming years."

In this context, Rutte drew attention to the need to continue innovative developments to make nuclear energy completely safe and more efficient, and noted the importance of the IAEA as a knowledge center and supervisory authority in this area.
