The modernization of Georgia's railways is nearing completion, after which the cargo capacity will increase to 48 million tons, Georgia's Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili told a ministerial roundtable on "Sustainable, Digital Middle Corridor and Beyond" within the framework of COP29 in Baku, Report informs.
According to Davitashvili, the railway modernization will improve the operational efficiency of the main railway line and increase annual capacity from 27 million to 48 million tons: "Additionally, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line will further strengthen the Middle Corridor, directly connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye. The construction of the East-West highway also actively continues, with 70% already open to traffic."
The minister also noted that the potential for developing control services between Georgia and Azerbaijan is currently being studied: "We offer advantages for both rail and road transport, including reduced fuel consumption and low emissions, as well as improved road safety. A feasibility study is currently underway and is planned to be completed early next year."
