Azerbaijan plans to create 21 GW of renewable energy capacity between 2031 and 2037, Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov said during the COP29 energy initiatives ministerial meeting in Baku, Report informs.
"Between 2031 and 2037, we plan to additionally [create capacity of] 21 gigawatts, including renewable energy, hydrogen, decarbonization, and other projects," said Zeynalov.
According to him, it's obvious that the country's national grid won't be able to absorb such huge volumes, and they will need to find applications for them. "Therefore, we need a reliable network of regional interconnectors," he noted.
The deputy minister reminded that Azerbaijan is currently implementing initiatives to create green energy corridors.
"Green corridors are extremely important for cost-effective energy transmission that can reduce prices. A feasibility study is currently being conducted for the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Europe corridor. We have two more important corridors. One is the Central Asia-Azerbaijan corridor, for which heads of three states signed an interstate agreement two days ago, and we will soon begin the feasibility study," noted the Deputy Minister.
He also mentioned that a feasibility study is already being developed for the Azerbaijan-Türkiye green energy corridor, with a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts. "I hope there's every chance that these two [latter] free corridors will be connected in the future," he said.
According to Zeynalov, by 2030 Azerbaijan plans to produce 7 gigawatts of renewable energy, 5 gigawatts of which will be exported.
