Armenia appoints former defense minister its ambassador to Russia

Former Defense Minister of Armenia Vagharshak Harutyunyan has been appointed Armenian Ambassador to Russia.

Report informs via Armenian media that the decree was signed by President Armen Sarkissian.

Vardan Toganyan was dismissed from this position by the previous decree.

Acting Armenian Defense Minister Vagharshak Harutyunyan resigned on July 20.

In 1999-2000, Vagharshak Harutyunyan served as the Minister of Defense. In 2002, he was demoted by President Robert Kocharian, and was stripped of the rank of lieutenant general. In 2019, by decree of President Armen Sarkissian, he was reinstated in the rank. In August 2020, he was appointed chief adviser to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and at the end of November of the same year - the head of the Defense Ministry.
