Azerbaijan (officially the Republic of Azerbaijan, azerb. Azərbaycan Respublikası) is a transcontinental sovereign state located in the Caucasus region at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south—with an exclave in Nakhchivan bordered by Turkey—the country spans over 86,600 square kilometers.
