Two mayors opposed to Pashinyan arrested

The mayor of the Armenian city of Goris, Arush Arushanyan, has been remanded in custody for two months.

Report informs, citing Novosti Armenia, his lawyer, Armen Melkonyan, told journalists on July 16.

According to the information, Arushanyan was charged with five counts. He is accused of abuse of office, engaging in illegal business activities, causing significant damage to the state or individuals or organizations, evading relevant projects, harming human health, polluting the environment, illegal exploitation of mineral resources, and so on.

On December 21 last year, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan planned to visit Sisian, Goris, Gafan, and Meghri. However, he could not reach Goris because the roads were closed, and he met with the residents of one of the villages.

Sisian Mayor Arthur Sargsyan was also arrested at midnight on July 16.

Both arrested mayors are among those who supported the opposition to Pashinyan and boycotted the prime minister's visit to the region.
