Turkish Foreign Ministry sharply criticizes French National Assembly

In its decision on the Assyrians and Chaldeans of April 29, 2024, the French National Assembly made accusations regarding the Ottoman period that have no legal or historical basis, Report informs, citing the Turkish Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The ministry emphasized that last year the French government did not support a similar decision adopted by the Senate.

“The submission of the same unfounded accusations to the Assembly, this time by deputies from the ruling party, is an example of an attempt to distort history for political interests. Parliaments do not have the power to interpret and judge history.

This decision also contradicts the 1948 UN General Assembly Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which states that the crime of genocide can only be prosecuted by a competent court,” the Turkish ministry said.
