In a dramatic turn of events, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner claimed that one person survived the Air India Flight AI171 crash, contradicting earlier reports that all 242 passengers and crew on board had died, Report informs referring to News18.
Speaking to News18 India, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner said, “My earlier statement was misquoted. One individual has been found alive. They are in critical condition and are currently undergoing treatment in hospital. Doctors are closely monitoring their status."
Forty-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national, has reportedly survived the crash. Currently being treated at Civil Hospital, Asarwa in Ahmedabad, Vishwash is said to have sustained injuries to his chest, eyes and feet. He had been visiting family in India and was returning to the UK along with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, whose status remains unknown.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Vishwash recalled the terrifying moments just after takeoff, saying, “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly."
Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner carrying 242 people, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport en route to London Gatwick. The jet, fully fueled for its long-haul flight, struck a doctors’ hostel belonging to a nearby medical college, tragically killing residents and engulfing the site in a massive fireball. Emergency teams raced to the scene amid thick plumes of smoke and more than 50 injured individuals are now receiving treatment in hospitals.
