Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is set to visit Ankara in May in response to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Athens last December, prime minister of Greece told the Skai 100.3 radio station, Report informs.
“We have taken very important steps towards bringing the two countries closer together. Greek-Turkish relations are on the path to normalization and we must maintain these achievements,” Mitsotakis said.
For the past three years, there has been a crisis between Greece and Türkiye of unprecedented duration, and it has constantly worsened.
Tensions were reduced after the devastating earthquake in Türkiye on February 6, 2023 when Mitsotakis immediately called Erdogan and promised all possible assistance in overcoming the consequences of the earthquake. In turn, Türkiye expressed condolences after the train accident in Greece. This made it possible to create a new climate in relations between the two countries.
In Athens on December 7, 2023, negotiations between Erdogan and Mitsotakis were held and a meeting of the High Cooperation Council was held. As a result, the Declaration of Friendly Relations and Good Neighborliness and 15 documents - agreements, memoranda, and joint declarations - were signed.
