The European Commission will hold an introductory discussion on this issue on June 13, the final discussion and decision will take place at a meeting of the Board of the European Commission on June 17, he said. The EC should formulate a recommendation on granting Kyiv the status of a candidate for joining the community, which will then be considered by the summit of EU heads of state and government on June 23-24, he noted.
The recommendation of the EC to the Council of the EU to launch negotiations on admission to the community is the first step towards the country’s accession to the European Union. Next, the country must agree with European negotiators on a set of conditions that it must fulfill.
In connection with the situation around Ukraine, the EC came up with an initiative to quickly grant this country the status of a candidate for membership. Immediately after this, a similar procedure was demanded by Moldova and Georgia.
