EU supplies Ukraine with 5 million doses of iodine amid fears of nuclear catastrophe

The European Union supplied Ukraine with 5 million doses of iodine due to the possibility of a catastrophe at a nuclear power plant, European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic said in an interview with the editorial association Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), Report informs via TASS.

“We have already been able to deliver 5 million doses of iodine to Ukraine for people living near nuclear power plants,” Lenarcic said.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), located in Enerhodar, southern Ukraine, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It is under the control of Russian forces. In early September, the plant was visited by a mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), headed by its director general Rafael Grossi. After the mission left the NPP, two agency representatives stayed in Enerhodar as observers. Later, the IAEA published a report calling for creating a safety zone around the ZNPP to prevent accidents due to hostilities.
