The number of new cases of coronavirus infection and COVID-related deaths has been declining globally for the third week in a row, but the epidemic situation is still "vulnerable," Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at the 74th World Health Assembly,
WHO is pleased to see a decline in reported cases and deaths for three consecutive weeks. However, the situation remains vulnerable, he said.
Ghebreyesus said that at the moment, no new varieties of coronavirus that seriously undermine the effectiveness of vaccines, diagnostic and therapeutic agents have been identified in the world. However, Ghebreyesus noted, there is no guarantee that this situation will continue. He said that the virus is constantly changing and future changes may make the existing tools for fighting the infection ineffective.
According to him, the current pandemic will not end until the virus transmission is brought under control in every country.
