A large wildfire that broke out on August 14 in the High Fens nature reserve in eastern Belgium is moving toward Germany.
According to Reuters, cited by Report, the wildfire, the largest in Belgium's history, has already destroyed more than 3,000 hectares of land.
The fire was preceded by weeks of hot and dry weather. On Friday, temperatures in Belgium reached 37 degrees Celsius. The reserve consists of heathlands and peat bogs, making firefighting efforts more difficult.
According to local authorities, around 600 people have left their homes in Liège province near the German border. Tourists and residents of border areas have been advised to leave the region.
Authorities in the German city of Monschau warn that the fire is already within 3 kilometers of the country's border.
More than 250 people are involved in firefighting operations, including over 100 firefighters from Belgium and Germany, as well as police officers and rescue workers. On Saturday, the EU sent three helicopters and two amphibious aircraft in response to Brussels" request for urgent reinforcements.
