US coronavirus: Several states see rising infection rates

A total of 14 US states have recorded their worst week yet for new coronavirus infections, with Texas hitting a record high in COVID-19 hospitalizations, all while restrictions to curb the pandemic are relaxed across America, Report says, citing Washington Post.

A resurgence in new infections has been detected in states, including Florida, Texas, and California, as authorities allow individual businesses and public places to reopen.

Since the start of June, 14 states and Puerto Rico have experienced their highest seven-day average of new coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. These states are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky, New Mexico, North Carolina, Mississippi, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.

The surge in cases that public health experts have described as worrying and repeatedly warning, shows that while Covid-19 is now in retreat in New York City and other major urban centers, it is sweeping across rural areas infecting smaller towns.

On December 31, 2019, Chinese authorities announced an outbreak of pneumonia in China's Wuhan, and the causative agent is a new type of coronavirus officially named COVID-19.

On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of a new coronavirus a pandemic.

More than 2 million people have contracted coronavirus in the US so far, while about 112 thousand lost lives.
