Sudan gold mine collapse kills 40 people

Over 40 people have died in the collapse of a gold mine in Sudan, Report informs citing TASS.

Rescuers are currently continuing their search in the hope of finding survivors.

Earlier, it was reported that about 46 people were employed at the mine.

The accident at the private Umm Darsaya gold mine, where the development of gold ore was carried out artisanally, occurred in the Al-Nuhud area in West Kordofan state last Sunday. Several shafts collapsed at once, which left no chance for most of the underground miners to get out, according to Al Arabiya.

This mine has long been considered dangerous. So, in January, four miners were killed there because of the collapse of the rock. Earlier, the authorities banned all work at the mine, setting up guards from local security forces at the site. However, about two months ago, when the guards left the mine, workers entered it again and continued illegal mining.

In Sudan, about two million people, who produce about 80% of all the precious metal mining in the country, are engaged in artisanal gold.
