Sri Lankan authorities have decided to station a naval ship in the Red Sea to help ensure the safety of navigation in the region amid the Houthi activities, President of the island state, Ranil Wickremesinghe said at a meeting in Colombo.

According to Report, he said the decision came amid growing concerns among international shipping companies.

"Shipping traffic has been disrupted due to Houthi attacks in the Red Sea area," the Sri Lankan president said. "If ships change routes and sail around South Africa instead of going through the Red Sea, this will lead to an increase in the cost of cargo. Therefore, we agreed to send a warship to counter Houthi attacks in the Red Sea."
