NATO has no ambitions to become a regional military alliance in the Indo-Pacific region, but it will "strongly discourage China from taking any actions that will change the status quo of Taiwan as it is right now," the alliance’s assistant secretary-general for emerging security challenges told Nikkei Asia in an interview on November 13, Report informs.
David van Weel said he does not see a scenario in which NATO -- responsible for security in Europe and the Atlantic -- would play a military role in the region. But he stressed, "The most important thing is that China realizes that they shouldn't take any unilateral steps to change the status quo of Taiwan. That is our strongest message in that direction."
