More than 1,000 citizens of Moldova living in Russia have applied to the consulate for help to return to the republic over the past two weeks, Moldovan deputy prime minister, Foreign Minister Nicolae Popescu said in an interview with Vocea Basarabiei TV channel, Report informs citing TASS.
“Approximately 1,200 people have requested documents to cross the border. We are seeing a significant increase in these requests. Many left the Russian Federation on the basis of their passports,” Popescu said.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova asked the Russian Federation to consider the possibility of refusing to recruit persons with a second Moldovan citizenship into the army. For her part, President of the Republic Maia Sandu threatened to deprive these people of Moldovan citizenship if they voluntarily participate in hostilities on the side of Russia.
