Kenyan police have so far recovered 89 bodies from mass graves in a forest in eastern Kenya, thought to be followers of a Christian cult who believed they would go to heaven if they starved themselves, Report informs referring to Star.

According to the Inspector General of the police Japhet Koome, 29 survivors have been retrieved from the vast 800-acre forest and are receiving medical aid.

The exhumation is currently ongoing even as Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki visited the scene.

At least 213 people have been reported missing as the investigation into a macabre cult continues.

On April 25, Kenya Red Cross said it had set up tracing and counselling desks at the Malindi Subcounty Hospital for the Shakahola response.

At the tracing desk, 213 people had been reported missing, among them 112 who are children below 18 years who are suspected to be followers of controversial Malindi Pastor Paul Mackenzie.

Paul Mackenzie Nthege, the leader of the cult, known as the Good News International Church was arrested after police received a tip-off that his vast land on the Shakahola forest in the Kilifi County of eastern Kenya, contained mass graves.
