Iranian Acting FM: US should take steps on nuclear negotiations

The US should take steps to improve bilateral relations and start negotiations on the nuclear agreement, Iranian Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani said in an interview with Newsweek, Report informs.

“Once upon a time, the US president sent a letter to the Iranian supreme leader. And the US president received the reply of that letter. This was one incident. Another one was the fact that the US committed the crime of assassinating a high-ranking Iranian general and, in response, an American military base was bombarded by my country. Accordingly, we believe that now the ball is in the court of the other side,” he emphasized.

In July 2015, Iran and the 5+1 group (comprising the US, Russia, China, the UK, France, and Germany) signed the nuclear deal, commonly referred to as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The document envisioned imposing restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing international sanctions against the Islamic Republic. However, in May 2018, Former President Donald Trump announced the United States’ withdrawal from the nuclear agreement. Negotiations on the restoration of the JCPOA began in the spring of 2021 in Vienna. But success was not achieved.
