India's COVID case count exceeds 29 million

Over the past day, India registered 92,596 new cases of coronavirus infection, taking the total case count to 29,089,069, Report informs, citing the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Meanwhile, 2,219 Indians died due to COVID, bringing the death toll to 353,528.

For the second day in a row, India recorded less than 100,000 new cases per day - only 86,498 infected. Prior to that, since April 5, the daily number of new infections exceeded 100,000. The highest incidence - 414,188 cases – was recorded on May 7.

The number of people infected with coronavirus in India grew by 1 million in 9 days from May 31, when the figure topped 28 million. Previously, this number increased by 1 million every three to five days: more than 27 million cases were recorded by May 26.

According to the ministry, the slowdown in the incidence indicates an improvement in the situation with coronavirus.

India ranks second globally (after the US) with the total number of coronavirus cases and third with the number of deaths (after the US and Brazil).
