Iceland to suspend its embassy’s work in Russia

The Icelandic Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador in Reykjavik to inform him of the closure of the Icelandic embassy in Russia from August 1, Report informs referring to Russian media.

Iceland also demanded that the Russian Federation “reduce the scale of activities in Reykjavik” and lower the status of the diplomatic mission.

At the same time, the Icelandic Foreign Ministry said that this was not a break in diplomatic relations. Iceland will work to reopen the embassy.

“The current situation simply doesn’t allow the small diplomatic service of Iceland to have an embassy in Russia. I hope that the conditions will someday allow us to have normal and fruitful relations with Russia, but it depends on the decisions that the Kremlin makes,” the Icelandic Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
